Career affirmations

A lot of career affirmations are about outcomes: the promotion, the offer, the client who finally says yes. You can’t do anything about an outcome in the next five minutes, which is why those lines tend to slide past. What you can do in five minutes is send the email, ask the question or close the other tabs.

The 25 career phrases in Mira are written about that. Nearly all of them describe something you do at work, and several are aimed at the moments people usually talk themselves out of: the meeting where you have a point, the message you have been avoiding, the job you are new at. They fall into four groups: speaking up, starting the thing you are avoiding, focus and stopping on time, and the long view.

Speaking up and taking space

For the moments when you are the newest, the youngest or the least sure person in the room. They are written as things you do, “say the thing”, “ask the question”, “take credit”, because the feeling of belonging tends to arrive after the action, not before it.

Pairs with a chair pulled up to a table, an open notebook, a pen on a page: pictures of taking a seat rather than of a corner office.

Starting the thing you are avoiding

Each of these names one specific avoidance: the hard task first, the boring part first, the message you have been putting off. “Before it is perfect” and “allowed to start over” cover the other half of the problem, which is not starting because you can’t start well.

Pairs with a clear desk in morning light, a blank page, a door about to open.

Focus, and stopping on time

The counterweight to the first two groups: less doing, better aimed. “One hour, one thing, no phone” is small enough to try at once, and “I log off when the day is done” is here on purpose, because a career you can’t stop working at is not one you would choose again.

Pairs with a closed laptop, a desk lamp switched off, a phone lying face down.

The long view

These are patient by design: “opens doors”, “becoming very good”, “grow through the hard parts”. Two of them, “the work no one sees” and “let my work speak”, are for the stretches where the effort is real and nobody has noticed yet, which is when it helps to have something in front of you.

Pairs with long roads, a staircase, a workshop bench with the tools laid out: pictures of the work being done rather than the title at the end.

Pick the one you would rather skip

Choose the line about the thing you are avoiding this week, not the one that flatters you most. It will be on your Home Screen the next time you reach for your phone instead of the task. Mira pairs it with any photo from your library.
