How often should you look at your vision board?

Every day, and only for a moment. There is no magic number of times, and a long stare isn’t obviously better than a glance. What matters is that the board keeps turning up.

The trouble is that a board on a wall does the opposite. It is in front of you a lot at first, and after a few weeks you stop seeing it. So the real question is less how often to look and more how to keep the board somewhere you look anyway.

A glance a day is enough

A vision board is not something to study. It is a reminder of direction, and reminders work by being repeated, not by being long. A few seconds once or twice a day does the job.

Why a board on the wall goes quiet

Anything you pass every day turns into furniture. In the first week you notice every picture; by the second month the board is part of the wall. That isn’t a lack of discipline. What never changes stops getting noticed.

Put it where you already look

You already look at your phone dozens of times a day without deciding to. Apple put the average at 80 unlocks a day in 2016, and nobody has to remember to do it. A board on the phone is in front of you every time, with no new habit to build.

  • A Home Screen widget can show a photo with a phrase and move through your board on its own. Mira does this; the Photos widget does it for pictures alone.
  • A Lock Screen widget sits under the clock, where you already look to check the time.
  • A shuffling photo wallpaper needs no app at all, but it carries no words.

Let the board change

Attention comes back when something is different. Rotate what you see: a new photo every hour, a different phrase every day, a card you swap when you finish something. A board that changes gets noticed; one that doesn’t gets ignored.

Once a week, ask it a question

Looking is not the same as reviewing. Once a week, give the board five minutes and ask it something.

  1. Look at each picture for a moment and ask whether you still want it.
  2. Remove anything you would not miss, and add one thing you care about now.
  3. Read each phrase again. If one makes you wince, rewrite it smaller.
  4. Choose the one picture you will do something about this week.

If the review takes longer than five minutes, the board has too many pictures on it.

When to rebuild it

Once a year is the usual answer, and it is a good one: at the new year, or on your birthday. In between, replace a picture as soon as its goal is done. A board full of finished goals stops pointing anywhere.

Look less, see more

Don’t aim for a daily ritual you have to remember. Put the board somewhere it shows up by itself, and change it now and then.
