Vision board ideas for a new job
A job search is mostly waiting, and a vision board is a good way to keep the waiting pointed somewhere. A new job is different again: the first months are when you decide what kind of colleague you are going to be.
Here are ideas for both: the board you make while you are looking, and the one you make once you have started.
While you are looking
Picture the job in enough detail that you would recognise it when it comes up.
- The kind of work you want to spend your days on
- The team or company culture you are after, from people who work there
- The commute, or the home office, you would like
- A salary figure you have researched
- A small weekly target: applications sent, people contacted
If you are changing careers
A career change needs a bridge, and the board should show it: the course, the side project or the first small paid job in the new field.
- The qualification or portfolio piece you need
- Someone who made the same switch
- Your first project in the new field, however small
Once you have started
- The first thing you want to deliver in your first ninety days
- The people you want to get to know
- A skill the role will push you to learn
- How you want to feel on a Friday evening
Lines to pair with it
Keep the words short and in the present tense, so they read as fact rather than wish. A few examples from Mira’s career phrases:
- Being new is not being less
- I ask the question I think is dumb
- I belong in the room
See it every day
Job hunting is easier when the goal is in front of you between rejections. Mira puts one picture and one line on your Lock Screen, so you see the job you are aiming for each time you check your messages.
Make a new board when you get it
When the offer comes, take the search board down and make the first-ninety-days one. The goal moved; the board should too.
